The Last Sniper VR
Sniper Elite VR is a 2021 virtual reality video game developed by Just Add Water and published by Rebellion Developments. The player plays as an elite sniper in the Italian resistance. The game was released for Oculus Quest, Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4. The game is part of the Sniper Elite series.
The gameplay of Sniper Elite VR is similar to previous titles in the series. The player explores an open level and take out targets from afar, using weaponry to take out Nazi soldiers they find along the way. The player can try to maintain stealth or go into open combat. When the player gets a long distance kill, an x-ray cam will activate that shows the enemy being killed. Additionally sniper rifles, can function as melee weapons that the player can use to silently take out enemies. The player gets score bonuses for getting environmental kills and use sounds from the environment to mask gunshots. The player can hold the offhand trigger in order to go into slow motion, where a reticle is displayed that makes it easier to hit shots. The game has save points where the player respawns if killed.
I can walk away from the computer and go to the shooting range, where you can try out the different guns, learn the shooting, zoom, and reload mechanics, and practice your shooting. Or, I can grab a briefcase that I assume held the many parts to my sniper rifle and walk to another exit to start the mission.
I have been a big of fan the Sniper Elite games on flat-screen, so when Rebellion announced there was going to be a VR game released I was instantly excited for those bone breaking and ball busting shots. Now I have taken this step into the shoes of a sniper, what did I think
Using two PlayStation Move wands is arguably the more immersive control method, though. All options allow for complete free movement (or teleporting, if you prefer) though playing with Move is the only way to make use of both hands. Yanking the lever on a bolt action sniper rifle helps dial up the immersion for sure, though this is by far the most finicky way of playing Sniper Elite VR.
Sniper Elite VR is the latest entry in the series, and it's the first step into virtual reality. Players put on their favorite VR rig (this review was done on PSVR connected to a PS4 Pro) and step into the eyes and shoes of a World War 2 sniper as he recounts his personal story in the war. The game takes place across 18 missions, spread across war-torn Europe.
The stealth system is almost unusable. There are no melee attacks, so even if you sneak up behind someone your only option is to shoot them. The pistol works as well as the sniper, which is to say much, but not all of the time. Enemies have gauges that fill when they are becoming aware of your presence. They respond to gunfire and bodies but appear to have the memory of goldfish. If an enemy stumbles upon a body they will be concerned, then quickly go about the rest of their days.
There are some really good elements in this game, where the presentation is immersive, and the gameplay works, but these stretches never last. Far too often the poor shooting mechanics make the uninteresting levels a chore. By the end of the game, I found myself intentionally revealing my presence to enemies, then waiting around a corner to mow them all down with impunity. Anything to get to the end of the level.
Police in West Virginia are investigating a series of shootings with disturbing similarities to the serial sniper shootings that terrorized the Washington, D.C., area last year. In the past week, three people with no apparent connection to each other have been killed in Charleston, victims of a sniper using a small-caliber rifle. The first victim, a 44-year-old man, was shot last Sunday as he talked on a public phone. Four days later, a 31-year-old woman was killed while pumping gas at a convenience store not far from the first shooting. About an hour later, a 26-year-old man was shot in the neck and killed at a
